We lied
01:33
|
|||
Well he lied to her when he said "I'll put my eyes out when next I can
cause true affection requires just such potent madness and myth and pain
and shouldn't it?
cause wouldn't it be so romantic, but wouldn't it,
wouldn't it feel so god damned awful?"
She kept herself clean of it, the lie that is
cause true emotion is motivated only by the subtlest of whims and
shouldn't it be?
Cause wouldn't it be so damned natural,
but wouldn't it, wouldn't it take forever?
We lied
cause we're pretenders.
The kept themselves clean of it, the love that is
cause true emotion ought to be motivated only by the subtlest of whims
and shouldn't it be?
Cause wouldn't it be so romantic, but shouldn't it,
shouldn't it just feel easy?

Homebody
02:34
|
|||
Homebody you already know you're lonely, don't you?
You're ghostwriting a memoir about her cause you love her.
Don't you ever call her 'baby' she might hear you
and then what would you do?
Nobody you already know you're lonely don't you?
So quit ghostwriting her memoir and tell her that
you love her and don't you ever seem embarrassed
else she'll turn you away
and then what would you say?
You'd say:
"I'm imagining a home like yours.
With your organ on your see-thru floor,
but you could be waiting
for quite a long time
for me to say this."

I'll shame myself insane and
time that's spent is time that's lost.
I know you feel the same
so I'll just say
"I should have been writing you off
and now I know this.
No you were, no you weren't
Hope it is, hope it isn't."
Now we'd been cleaning up everything
from the mess we made
from the kitchen sink to the ceiling.
Yeah and even everything in between
like you and me
and now I know I'll never be writing you off
and now I know this.
No you were, no you weren't who you were, who you weren't.
We'd been cleaning up everything.
I don't remember anything, or is it everything?
I should have been writing you off, but you know I couldn't
cause who we were and who we weren't
hoped we were what we weren't.

Warpaint
03:11
|
|||
Before you broke my bank I threw it all into the Warpaint,
a car that you'd bid on.
And if you could hold my gaze I'd show you just how long
that old car sat by the raceway
and I'd set you right.
I said I should've got wise,
but we're all thin new ice and
when's it ok to move underneath?
Well it could be when you trust me.
And if you broke my ears how would any of me hate you?
In fact I'd still be mad about you
cause you're my favorite kind of empty.
I'll leave it there.

Please
01:15
|
|||
She don't love you, that's easy, yet she calls you frequently
and when you answer inadvertently you feel happy.
So when she asks you for a ride to the Target on the West Side
you ought to tell her 'hell no,' but you don't.
You say please, could I help you retrieve anything?
And if you please, we could even go get a coffee, or maybe tea
if you please.

The estuary
02:00
|
|||
I was just a little child a quarter mile from the estuary.
I pushed my bike through the pluff mud halfway home from
the sanctuary in view of the harbor. I'd almost forgotten.
Head home specifically at 6:05 cause that's how late you can be.
Pushing the limit you arrive at 6:07. Park your bike in the garage
open the door lying some tale about wind in your eyes.
They're all well aware that you're high.
I was just a little child a quarter mile from the estuary.
Rode my bike down to the fort that fired on the fort that started the war.
Head home specifically five years ago with the girl you knew you'd know
forever, but you were too afraid then to confront it all and
park your car by the beach, sleep on the floor.
Lying some tale about sand in your eye, we're all well aware that you cry.

Pine trees
02:59
|
|||
Don't leave your house too late at night.
You might get stuck out in the dark.
Pine trees, they whisper your name.
Who could've told them? Nobody knows, but
they do, they know your name.
They do, they know your name.
Don't leave your bedroom door unlocked,
cause my friend, she might visit you.
The bedposts, they whisper your name.
Who could've told them? Nobody knows, but
they do, they know your name.
They do, they know your name.
Don't get spooked if it rains tonight.
All those little noises, they're just water.
I might try and meet you in your dreams tonight,
so look out for me cause
I don't want to be lost.
I don't want to be lost.

Cape Canaveral
02:58
|
|||
We held our tongues against the iciest pole we'd found
and turned our cheeks towards the icicles falling down.
We could not have know that we were ten feet underground
and it'd been weeks since we had even heard a sound.
They'd sent in wires and called and wrote that we should just stay on.
Forget our fire, our gall and they'd asked
"well, what could be wrong
with staying on?"
We held our tongues when they said rhythm has it's place.
Our dancing shoes thrown to the corner in our cave
and I get so tired I could just throw it all away,
but we've got our fire, our gall and the base understanding
that time had passed on like a loved one, yet stretched out like a lover
and our blood flowed sometimes faster than the spaceships at Cape Canaveral.
All the world was watching they'd set the stage before we got here.
There's hope down in the cellar. Mother Earth, it's time to help her.
I know we love our fancy things and pleasure's not a fickle thing,
but diamond rings and pretty things make petty thieves of all my friends.
We're smaller than we ever knew how to be.
Yet this thing is larger than we'll ever know.
We just can't see it all we can't be it all.
